UK Gambling Commission Seeks Public Input on Deposit Limits
The UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) is currently seeking feedback from the public regarding how deposit limits should be implemented. This new consultation period will remain open until April 30th, allowing consumers to voice their opinions on this important matter.
Confusion Surrounding Different Types of Limits
The latest consultation by the UKGC focuses on new consumer control regulations that are expected to be enforced by October 2025. These changes are part of the recommendations presented in the 2023 Gambling Act review white paper, which aims to modernize gambling practices for the digital era.
Traditionally, deposit limits were established by customers to restrict the maximum amount of money they could deposit within a specific timeframe. For instance, individuals with a £20 weekly deposit limit could only deposit up to £20 in their accounts throughout that week, regardless of their winnings or losses.
However, some operators have adopted an alternative approach known as “net deposit limits.” Unlike the conventional method, net deposit limits consider both deposits and withdrawals. This means that a customer with a £20 deposit limit who withdraws £10 could still deposit an additional £10, effectively increasing the total deposit limit to £30. This approach has been beneficial for successful customers who are able to withdraw funds and continue depositing money.
Proposals by the UKGC
The UKGC has highlighted that the existence of two distinct types of deposit limits can be confusing for customers, particularly due to the similarities in their descriptions. In its fourth white paper consultation, the UKGC has proposed to redefine the term “deposit limits” and other financial restrictions outlined in its Remote Gambling and Software Technical Standards.
The primary objective of these proposed changes is to enhance the clarity of language used in the standards and to ensure that the gambling system is optimized to empower consumers to monitor and control their gambling activities effectively.
