The International Betting Integrity Association Reports Slight Increase in Suspicious Matches
The International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA) recently released its latest industry report, revealing a small uptick in alerts for suspicious betting activities. The organization disclosed that there were 63 alerts reported in the first quarter of 2025.
More Alerts in Q1
According to the IBIA, there was a total of 63 alerts of suspicious betting activities reported to relevant authorities in the first quarter of 2025. This indicates an 11% increase compared to the same period last year, although there was a 3% decrease from the previous quarter.
In comparison, there were 57 alerts reported in Q1 2024 and 65 alerts in Q4 2024. The data is compiled from the IBIA’s 80+ members who operate more than 140 sports betting brands, with a combined annual betting turnover exceeding $300 billion.
The IBIA highlighted that soccer and tennis continued to dominate in terms of alerts, accounting for 40 out of the total alerts. This represented a 14% increase in alerts for these sports compared to the previous quarter.
On the other hand, the number of alerts for table tennis dropped significantly to only 9 in Q1 2024, marking a 53% decrease from the previous quarter. In Q4 2024, there were 21 alerts reported for table tennis.
Regional Breakdown
Over half of all alerts were related to sporting events in Europe and North America. Despite reporting 32 alerts from these regions, the IBIA noted a decrease from the 45 alerts reported in Q4 2024.
Khalid Ali, the CEO of IBIA, described the results as “relatively consistent” with the previous quarter and the same period last year. He noted that soccer and tennis remained the primary focus of alerts, with tennis seeing a significant decline in the number of alerts.
Ali explained that the decrease in alerts was largely due to a reduction in tennis-related suspicious activities, which is a positive trend. The increase in table tennis alerts observed in Q4 2024 did not continue into Q1 2025, reverting back to previous levels.
Focus on Tennis
Ali emphasized the IBIA’s cautious approach towards tennis due to its historical association with fraud and match-fixing. The organization has established new partnerships aimed at further reducing the number of alerts in the sport.
Moreover, the IBIA recently implemented a significant technological upgrade to enhance its ability to identify and flag potential cases of match-fixing, signaling a proactive stance in maintaining integrity in the licensed betting sector.
