ACMA Takes Action Against Offshore Online Casinos
The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) recently made a significant announcement regarding its continued efforts to protect Australia’s gaming market. The regulatory body revealed that it has taken action against two more offshore online casinos that were found to be operating in violation of Australian law.
ACMA Blocks Crown Slots and Billy Billion
The two offshore operators, Crown Slots and Billy Billion, were found to have breached the Interactive Gambling Act 2001, prompting the ACMA to take regulatory action. In response, the authority has requested Australian internet service providers (ISPs) to block access to the domains of these online casinos.
This move is part of the ACMA’s ongoing efforts to combat illegal online gambling activities and protect Australian consumers from unscrupulous operators. The regulator has emphasized that website blocking is just one of the enforcement options at its disposal, and it will not hesitate to use such measures to prevent offshore companies from targeting Australian players.
Consumers Warned to Stay Alert
Since November 2019, the ACMA has been actively blocking illicit offshore operators, with a total of 1,178 illegal gambling and affiliate websites already being blocked. Furthermore, 220 illegal services have voluntarily exited the Australian market following the ACMA’s crackdown on illegal gambling activities.
In February, the ACMA targeted eight more offshore operators, including JokaRoom, AUDPokies888, Aura Play, and others, blocking their access to the Australian market. The regulatory body has been transparent in its enforcement actions and continues to issue new blocking requests against online casino operators.
Despite the popularity of online gambling, it is essential for Australian players to be aware that such activities are illegal in the country. Therefore, even if an online gaming service appears legitimate, it is operating unlawfully. Network 10 aired four gambling advertisements during the event’s first practice round, despite strict regulations prohibiting gambling ads during certain hours. The company attributed the incident to human error and took steps to prevent similar violations in the future.
